SEO for AI Search: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity

GraphicDOP Avatar

Search used to be simple: rank in Google’s top ten and the clicks would follow. In 2026 a growing share of answers is written by AI. Google shows AI Overviews and offers AI Mode, millions of people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini instead of typing keywords, and more searches than ever end without a single click.

The good news: AI engines still need sources — and they cite websites they trust. This guide explains how SEO for AI search works (often called GEO or AEO) and gives you a practical checklist to get your business mentioned and linked in AI answers.

The numbers behind the shift

  • 68% of Google searches in the US ended without a click in January–April 2026, up from about 60% in 2024 (SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb data, reported by Search Engine Land).
  • 43% of US searches showed an AI Overview in May 2026, up from roughly 15% a year earlier, and visits to Google’s AI Mode more than doubled over the same period (Similarweb, The 2026 Generative AI Landscape).
  • 800 million+ people use ChatGPT every week, according to OpenAI’s October 2025 announcement.

SEO, AEO and GEO — what’s the difference?

TermGoalWhere you appear
SEO — search engine optimisationRank your pages in search resultsGoogle and Bing results pages
AEO — answer engine optimisationBe the direct answer to a questionFeatured snippets, voice assistants, AI answers
GEO — generative engine optimisationBe cited or recommended inside AI-generated answersGoogle AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot

In practice they overlap. Strong classic SEO is still the foundation: AI Overviews are built from pages in Google’s index, and ChatGPT search combines its own crawler with results from third-party search providers such as Bing. GEO and AEO add a layer on top — content that is easy for AI to understand, quote and trust.

How AI engines choose which websites to cite

When someone asks an AI assistant a question, it typically runs one or more searches, reads the top results, pulls out the passages that best answer the question and writes a summary — often with links to its sources. To be cited, your page has to:

  1. be found — crawlable and indexed by Google, Bing and AI crawlers;
  2. be relevant — answer the exact question clearly, in a passage that makes sense on its own;
  3. be trusted — come from a business or author with real expertise, consistent information and mentions across the web.

The SEO for AI search checklist

1. Let search engines and AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt, firewall and CDN settings. Google AI Overviews use Googlebot, ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and Microsoft Copilot relies on Bing’s crawler. Google-Extended only controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models — blocking it doesn’t remove you from Google Search. Some hosting and CDN providers now block AI crawlers by default, so it’s worth checking yours.

2. Rank in classic search first

AI answers lean heavily on pages that already rank. Get the basics right: one clear topic per page, descriptive titles and meta descriptions, logical headings, internal links, fast loading and a mobile-friendly design. If your site is slow or hard to crawl, no amount of “AI optimisation” will fix it — here’s how modern AI-assisted web design solves that.

3. Answer first, then explain

Start each section with a direct answer of 40–60 words, then add detail, examples and nuance. Use the questions your customers actually ask as headings — “How much does a website cost?”, “How long does SEO take?”. Self-contained passages are exactly what AI systems quote.

4. Structure content so machines can read it

Use clear H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, numbered steps, bullet lists, comparison tables and FAQ sections. Define terms and include specific numbers, dates and prices where you can. Structured pages are far easier to parse and quote than long walls of text.

Clear structure — headings, lists, tables and FAQs — makes your content easy for AI assistants to quote.

5. Add schema markup

Structured data (JSON-LD) tells search engines and AI exactly who you are and what each page is about. Start with Organization or LocalBusiness (name, logo, address, contact details and social profiles in sameAs), Article with a named author, Product and Review where relevant, and BreadcrumbList. On WordPress, Rank Math makes this straightforward.

6. Build E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authority and trust

  • real author bios with credentials and photos,
  • an About page that tells your story and shows the people behind the business,
  • case studies with real results,
  • the same name, address and phone number everywhere,
  • reviews on Google and other platforms — public proof that AI can find.

7. Publish original information

AI engines don’t need another generic article — they need sources that add something new. Share your own data, prices, process, before-and-after results, expert opinions and local knowledge. Original facts and statistics are the content most likely to be cited.

8. Get mentioned beyond your website

AI models judge reputation by what others say about you: reviews, directories, industry lists, press, podcasts, YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit discussions. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, collect reviews and share expert answers where your customers spend time.

9. Keep content fresh

Update key pages regularly — prices, statistics, screenshots and dates. Show “last updated” dates and refresh older posts instead of publishing thin new ones. IndexNow (supported by Bing and built into Rank Math) lets you notify search engines the moment content changes.

10. Make it technically easy for AI

Many AI crawlers don’t render JavaScript the way Googlebot does, so important content should be in the HTML your server sends — not loaded only by scripts. Keep pages fast, maintain a clean XML sitemap and don’t hide key text behind clicks. An llms.txt file that summarises your main pages is an emerging proposal: it doesn’t hurt, but no major search engine has confirmed using it yet.

How to measure your visibility in AI search

  • Google Search Console — clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report as web search.
  • Google Analytics 4 — check referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Manual prompt tests — ask the questions your customers ask and note which sources get cited.
  • AI visibility tools — platforms such as Ahrefs Brand Radar track how often your brand appears in AI answers.

What not to do

  • Don’t mass-produce AI articles. Google’s spam policies target scaled content abuse, and low-value pages can drag down your whole site.
  • Don’t hide instructions or keywords for AI in your pages — it’s manipulation and can backfire.
  • Don’t block every bot “just in case” — you may disappear from AI answers where your competitors appear.
  • Don’t forget people. Your content still has to convince a human to call you.

Local businesses: the quick wins

If you serve customers locally, AI answers to questions like “best web designer near me” often draw on Google Business Profile data and reviews. Complete every field, add photos and services, keep opening hours accurate, answer questions and ask happy clients for reviews. Then make sure your website repeats the same facts, backed by LocalBusiness schema.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. AI engines rely on search indexes and trusted websites. SEO is evolving: you now optimise to be the source AI quotes, not only the blue link people click.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

It depends on competition and your site’s authority. Pages that already rank well in Google often start appearing in AI Overviews first; building wider brand mentions takes months.

Do I need a separate strategy for ChatGPT and Google?

Mostly no. The foundations are the same — crawlable, fast, well-structured and trustworthy content. ChatGPT search also uses third-party providers such as Bing, so make sure your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools too.

What is llms.txt and do I need it?

It’s a proposed text file that lists your most important pages for AI tools. It’s optional and not an official standard — focus on the checklist above first.
